Clive Smith


Clive Smith has a BSc (Hons) degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He has more than 19 years experience in the Space Industry. He worked as a Spacecraft Systems Engineer with British Aerospace in Hertfordshire, England, on a number of satellite projects. He was responsible for a number of system engineering studies in the Future Projects Division, one of which was for the single stage to orbit space plan, HOTOL.

He became a lecturer in Space Technology at Kingston University in 1989 and while there, won a scholarship to the International Space University in Strasbourg, France. In late 1989 he was passed fit by the Soviet Medical Commission to train for space flight and was a reserve Astronaut for a year for the Anglo-Soviet Mir Mission. In 1991, he joined Crawley Warren (now Benfield Group) where he has worked on all aspects of space insurance programs. He has been part of the ISB team since it was created in 1991.

Tim Wakeman


Tim joined ISB in 2002, and has some 22 years experience of handling aerospace insurance. He was most recently involved in the acquisition of the Indosat / Palapa C2 account. Tim’s previous account executive responsibilities have included Rolls-Royce, British Aerospace and Saab and he is currently responsible for all aspects of the placement and servicing of our customers’ insurance programs, including program design, marketing and drafting of bespoke policy wordings. Tim is an elected member of the Royal Aeronautical Society, and prior to joining the Group he was a Director of the Aerospace Division of Lloyd’s broker UIB where he was responsible for the handling of several satellite in-orbit insurance placements including Arabsat and Nilesat.

Lee Stannard


Lee has been employed in the insurance industry since 1986 and has over 17 years experience in space insurance since joining CT Bowring (now Marsh) in 1989. During his time at Marsh he obtained a broad experience and was involved at all levels of the insurance procurement process. In 2006 he joined ISB where he is now a member of the team in London and is involved in the placement and servicing of a number of accounts.

Francis Richards


Francis Richards graduated from Exeter University in 1977 with a combined honors degree in Economics and Statistics. He became an associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute in 1983. He spent five years with J.H. Minet primarily in the Aviation division and joined Crawley Warren (now Benfield Group) in 1982 working as an account executive in the Space division.

Matthew Gleeson joined Crawley Warren (now Benfield Group) in 1998 after graduating from York University with a B.A. (Hons) Degree in Single Subject History, specializing in Early Modern Criminal Law and Legal history. Matthew co-ordinates the ISB Market Report and is involved in all facets of placement and servicing on a broad range of accounts and customer programmes.
